The coupler on a KitchenAid blender can fail for a number of reasons. It is made from natural rubber which will deteriote over time. It may become brittle and very hard which can cause it to feel more like plastic. Extreme cold can make it easy to snap off the black lugs on top and extreme heat (such as blending hot soups for many minutes) can make the rubber soft and deform. You can remove the old coupler with this spanner and a tea towel. This works quickly and easily over 95% of the time.
