The action takes place in Japan in the 11th century. In the ruins of the Rashomon stone gate, a woodcutter and a wandering monk are hiding from a thunderstorm, testifying at the trial of the murder of the samurai Takehiro Kanazawa and the rape of his wife Masako, the incident occurred on a forest road. They are joined by a passing peasant, to whom they tell this story. Both the monk and the woodcutter are amazed that the stories of the participants do not match. The woodcutter tells how he found the corpse of a samurai in the forest and immediately ran off to notify the nearest court official. Further, four versions of what happened are offered, which are told by the participants in the case during interrogation in court.
