DESCRIPTIONS

Product Description Leoš Janá?ek was an authority on his native folk-music, and the Lachian and Moravian Dances preserve and celebrate culture and traditions which were vanishing even in his own lifetime. Based on Gogol's historical novel, Janá?ek's inspired orchestral rhapsody on Taras Bulba depicts three moving and dramatic episodes in the violent life of the Cossack leader, climaxing in his stirring and triumphant prophecy of liberation. This release follows Antoni Wit's acclaimed Warsaw recording of Janá?ek's Glagolitic Mass and Sinfonietta (8.572639). Antoni Wit, one of the most highly regarded Polish conductors, studied conducting with Henryk Czyz and composition with Krzysztof Penderecki at the Academy of Music in Kraków, subsequently continuing his studies with Nadia Boulanger in Paris. In 2002 he became managing and artistic director of the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. Review Nikolai Gogol's short novel Taras Bulbawas, to some extent, the product of anti-Polish sentiment that arose in the wake of Poland's 1830-31 uprising against Russia. But nineteenth-century politics don't prevent the Warsaw Philharmonic and Antoni Wit from giving Leos Janacek's musical version of the Cossack's story a robust, colorful treatment on this new disc from Naxos. Equally energetic performances of Janacek's Lachian and Moravian Dances fill out the disc. --WCLV Radio, Jerome Crossley Taras Bulba (1915) is based on the fifteenth century Cossack hero of Nikolai Gogol's 'gruesome story.' Check out how Janacek builds drama in a menacing battle sequence, with visceral contributions from the low brass. The Moravian Dances of 1891 also packs a punch, every bit as colorful as Dvorak's folk style but with some extra bite. --WQXR Radio
