This is part of a series of 24 paintings Monet began in 1891. He returned to the motif day after day, recording its appearance at different times and in varying light and weather conditions. Upon learning this grove of poplars was to be harvested for lumber, Monet attended the auction and partnered with the wood merchant to buy the trees so he could finish painting them.
