About African Saints, African Stories: 40 Holy Men And
Product Description
From the continent of Africa come a wealth of saints and other inspirational people included in the Catholic tradition. Some are well-known, like Saints Augustine, a doctor of the church, and his mother, Monica, while others may be unknown to us, such as Blessed Daudi Okelo and Blessed Jildo Irwa, twentieth-century Ugandan martyrs. Regardless of popularity, each holy person included in
African Saints, African Stories displays perseverance in faith and can inspire us all.
Dr. Camille Brown has chosen to share forty stories from hundreds, some for the first time, in this book. Each chapter provides a brief biography, a relevant Scripture passage, a prayer and reflection questions. The African men and women included are declared saints, blesseds or venerables in the Catholic church, as well as "saints in waiting," those who have not yet received official recognition from the church but who contributed to the faith and are members of the communion of saints.
Review
African Saints, African Stories reminds me of the phrase a people with no history have no destiny. I highly recommend Camille Brown s book. May it remind all who read it of the rich history and contributions to the Catholic church by persons of African descent. --Rev. Stephen D. Thorne, executive director, Office for Black Catholics, and pastor, St. Therese Church, Archdiocese of Philadelphia
These holy people exemplify the universality of the church. Their stories need to be told. We are blessed that Camille Brown has done so, and with such love and affection. Her book belongs on every Catholic educator's shelf. --Carmina Magnusen Chapp, Ph.D., academic dean, religious studies division, St. Charles Borromeo Seminary
