About Joyful Sadness: The Music Of Vince Benedetti

Joyful Sadness is the latest offering from American pianist Vince Benedetti and his sextet and is dedicated entirely to his own compositions. Ranging from ballads through to hard-bop grooves, the compositions are fresh and yet seemingly familiar, sparking interest and attention from the very first bar! Vince Benedetti is probably best known for discovering Diana Krall who joined his quintet and toured parts of Europe during 1989 and the 1990 album they made together titled, Heart Drops (TCB22182) with bassist Reggie Johnson and drummer Alvin Queen. A track from that album featuring Krall on vocals is included as a bonus to this new recording. American born, but living in Switzerland since 1964, Benedetti has been leading his own groups, from trio through to big band, for over four decades. His principal influences on piano have been Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell and Barry Harris, and hes worked with just about every American musician who ever came to Switzerland; Pepper Adams, Chet Baker, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Roy Eldridge, Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, Scott Hamilton, Slide Hampton, The Heath Brothers, "Philly" Joe Jones, Hank Mobley and countless others.
