About Sacred River

Product Description Inspired by Siddhartha, who learns from the wise old ferryman to listen carefully to the voices of the river until he hears the eternal song of oneness and harmony, Gandalf invites you to imagine yourself in a boat on the Sacred River, letting the music be your ferryman, taking you gently across the water. Gandalf intricately weaves the sounds of acoustic, classical, and electric guitars with keyboard, percussion, piano, and soundsamplers for his enchanting sonic tale. Amazon.com A pleasant though modest recording, Sacred River is the third domestic release from Gandalf, an Austrian guitarist/multi-instrumentalist whose serene, sometimes atmospheric compositions can evoke comparisons to the music of 2002, David Arkenstone, and Secret Garden--even Mike Oldfield in a restful mood. Gandalf seems in an especially restful mood on Sacred River, a recording that mostly sidesteps the subtle drama and faint cosmic undercurrents that gave his two previous recordings just a hint of an edge. Even so, he manages to create some notable impressions here: the slow glide into sustained bliss heard on "Silent Joy," the welcoming stroll to undisturbed peace on "A Visionary Passage," and the float-away contentment of "Where the River Joins the Ocean." Meanwhile, most other selections revolve around quiet, guitar-focused pieces that, while calming, exude generic qualities that tend to leave listeners adrift in thematic flat water. Still, as a meditative/relaxing audio backdrop, it's an agreeable listen. Point of interest: The liner notes for the first time carry a photo of the artist, whose long white locks at first glance bring to mind Tolkien's Gandalf, as played in The Lord of the Rings trilogy by Ian McKellen. --Terry Wood Review ". . . (Gandalf's) is ambient music as it should be." -- Ambient Visions ". . . (Gandalf's) songs are not rushed, allowing you time to submerge yourself in the near meditative music landscape. -- Spirit Spot DFW "...Gandalf's balance of subtle drama and twinkling-star sweetness is a winning combination." -- Terry Wood, Amazon.com ...a sonic caress, a mental equivalent of being gently stroked by someone with delicate hands. -- Dene Bebbington, Melliflua.com ...dreamy melodies of great strength, with ethereal environments, outlining an enchanting sonic landscape of a mystic-romantic character. -- Hector Jordan, Amazing Sounds A winning sonic vacation from all the noise of the day... -- Chris Spector, Editor & Publisher, Midwest Record Recap Free of vanity and aggression, the performer here asks the listener to plunge into the innermost reaches of his heart. -- Serge Kozlovsky, February 2006 Gandalf has found a way to bring about a much desired peace and reinforce it with his delightful music. -- R.J. Lannan, New Age Reporter.com, February 2006 About the Artist As you listen to Gandalf’s music, you know exactly why this "painter of musical landscapes" chose his name, years before J.R.R. Tolkien’s cult-epic Lord of the Rings captivated filmgoers around the world. Austrian by birth, Gandalf has traveled widely through Europe, North and South American and Asia. The more cultures he has come in touch with, the more he has been touched by the realization that far more things unite than separate the various peoples on our planet. His goal in composing and recording is to create music that dissolves boundaries. Gandalf’s music is inspired by the beauty of nature and by the wisdom and myths of various cultures. He tells sound stories and describes moods and magical moments that point to other realities behind the scenes in this fast-paced modern world. He wants us to discover our incomparable and individual selves as we relax and "lose" ourselves in the listening. The music is intimate, tender, rich with grandeur and always heart opening. Gandalf plays many and varied instruments (acoustic and electric guitars, sitar, saz, charango, bouzouki, balaphon, piano, synthesizers and sample-keyboards, an
