Pierre Yrieix Daumesnil (14 July 1776 - 17 August 1832), French soldier, autographed manuscript document (DS). This one page document measures approximately 7" x 9" in size and is dated March 1, 1831.Daumesnil was a French soldier in the armies of Napoleon during the first Empire and Restoration, eventually rising to the rank of brigadier general. He participated in the Battle of Wagram, in which he lost a leg, which was replaced by a wooden prosthesis; hence his nickname jambe de bois ("wooden leg"). He was later assigned to the defense of the Château de Vincennes in 1812, with the famous words "I shall surrender Vincennes when I get my leg back"This document is crisply signed by Daumesnil at the conclusion. It is in good to very good condition, with overall light toning not affecting the signature. There are some scattered creases, expected intersecting folds and small tears.
