Baroness Orczy was born in Hungary and emigrated with her family to England in 1880. She went to art school and began to write. Her first play, the Scarlet Pimpernel, introduced the idea of a hero with a secret identity into the popular consciousness. Set in 1657, it deals with intrigue and romance in Puritan England.
