CHARLES EVANS HUGHES, JR The Solicitor General pens his signature on this card in black ink Signature: "Charles E. Hughes, Jr.", 3½x2. The son and namesake of former New York Governor and Presidential candidate Charles Evans Hughes, Hughes, Jr. (1889-1951) served as Solicitor General under President Hoover (1929-1930). He resigned when his father became Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Returning to private legal practice, he defended Alcoa Aluminum in a famous and prolonged (1937-1945) anti-trust case.
