DEUCALION et PIRRHA Mythology print Printed France: c. 1690. Fine original antique engraved image, likely produced in the later part of the 17th century, well over 300 years ago. This particular type of 17th century engraved printing process is very time intensive and highly skilled, involving medieval guild-trained artisans and challenging hand operated printing machinery, both of which are now quite rare. Because of these and various other factors, such as the basic evolution of printing processes, it is now essentially extinct as a method of reproducing pictorial images, such as this one. Old French script text is on the back, as issued, image was clearly extracted at some point from a now rare 17th century illustrated book. Printed on quality period hand-made rag paper which may show typical gentle signs of age, perhaps some minor light spotting or foxing and a bit of faint "show-through from text on back", but retains its inherent structural flexibility and soundness. An appealing, uncommon and charming primitive engraved image.
