Mordechai Namir (1897-1975) was born in the Russian Empire, in what is now Ukraine. Arrested in 1924 for Zionist activity, he emigrated to Mandate Palestine following his release. Working as a journalist and statistician while serving in Haganah, he was also involved in party work for what would become the labor party. He was General Secretary of the Histadrut labor federation (1950-1956) and CEO of the government-owned Amidar construction company. First elected to the Knesset in 1950 as a Mapai party member, he served as Minister of Labour from 1960 to 1969. In those same years he was Mayor of Tel Aviv. Namir wrote a book about his 1949-1950 diplomatic mission to the USSR and Eastern Europe. Corners lightly worn. Lightly toned.
