About Carmel

Product Description Carmel lies on the shores of Lake Gleneida, some 50 miles north-northeast of New York City, not far from the Connecticut border. It has served as the county seat for Putnam County since 1812 and has emerged over the years as the region's governmental and legal center. The vintage postcards presented in Carmel portray the elegant Putnam County Courthouse, a national historic landmark; the picturesque lake and agricultural pursuits; the corner dam and watershed development; Drew Seminary and other local institutions; the days of steam trains and Model Ts; and the community's eventual suburbanization. About the Author George Carroll Whipple III, a lifelong resident of Putnam County, lives on his grandfather's farm, five miles from the historic Greek Revival courthouse. He founded Preserve Putnam County/the Whipple Foundation in 1999, helped establish and build Spain Cornerstone Park, and replanted the courthouse elm trees. He is active in the Town of Carmel Historical Society, the Southeast Museum, the Kent Historical Society, Putnam County Land Trust, and the Putnam County Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. Royalties from the sale of Carmel will be donated to local historical societies.
