About East Village

Phill Hopkins is continually influenced by news stories and world events. The work makes reference to many conflicts that are happening around us - Syria, Ukraine, Gaza, Iraq. To Hopkins, this period is reminiscent of the era of Thatcher and Reagan in the 1980s, and the artist has found a connection to artwork that he made during this time. His practice requires the collection and cataloguing of images taken from the news; however, where once he used physical scrapbooks, these images are collated digitally, stored on his laptop. Hopkins is interested in how we process images, often of war and conflict, in a domestic setting; trying to make sense of how we encounter, question and then attempt to make some sort of response. The response to these images and others like them, is one of utter unbelievable horror. The destruction is completely beyond any understanding. Hopkins is fascinated with unravelling images that come to him via the intermediary that is his radio, TV and laptop, essentially the things in-between.
