About Mehano, 23019 Loco 4-6-4 Hudson PRR, Train

The first North American 4-6-4 locomotive was designed in 1925 from Milwaukee Road. They named the locomotive ÈMilwaukee typeÇ but in some documents appeared also refering to ÈBalticÇ. Soon after, the Milwaukee Road company went into bankruptcy and the plans for the loco were set aside. In November 1926 NYC started to experiment with their Pacifics equipped with a four-wheel trailing truck. At the same period they ordered one 4-6-4 from ALCO. The test results were so satisfactory to lead NYC to order 59 further Hudsons. Within 1937 NYC received 275 Hudsons, more than half of all Hudsons ever buit. Up to 1948, 487 locomotives were built from different builders. Hudsons benefit from nearly all new tecnical developments of that period, which made them a very successfull passenger unit. With the growing dieselization in the Ô40, Hudsons were moved from mainlines to a local lines or even to a freight service.
