Maurice Francis Egan's "A Gentleman" is a book meant to guide young Catholic men in a good, happy, virtuous, Catholic way of living at the turn of the 20th Century. Egan discusses many different topics, including manners and etiquette, how to express one's thoughts while speaking and writing, and what books to read and which to avoid. Egan's advice is just as helpful to the Catholic young man setting out to make his way in the world today as it was in 1893 when it was published. Although parts of the book are outdated, much of the advice still rings true 130 years later. This glimpse into the world of American Catholicism at the turn of the 20th Century is interesting in its historical value, but also in the value of its content. A good read for anyone wanting to learn how to make their life pleasant and well-ordered.
