Aquatic Arts 10 Live Freshwater Pom Pom Crabs Features

  • The rare Freshwater Pom Pom Crab is named for its unique pom-pom-like claws. Their shells appear to glow with yellow or tan colors, black or brown designs, and a texture like smooth polish.

  • Unlike hermit crabs, these are fully aquatic and must live in an aquarium or vivarium. An internal or external pump, a heater, and a filter are needed (a canister and bio sponge filter is ideal).

  • Supplement with extra assorted foods such as dry flakes or pellet foods, wafers and treats, calcium treatment, etc.

  • These crabs seek hiding places to feel safe, such as an aquatic plant, decoration, or some sort of enclosure with an opening, like a cave or pipe. They go great with Spongebob Crusty Crab décor!

  • Each Aquatic Arts brand plants and animals kit comes with a 100% live arrival guarantee, offer of replacement or return of DOAs, plus free email support!

About Aquatic Arts 10 Live Freshwater Pom Pom Crabs

We are quite proud to be perhaps the only national retailer in the United States to offer Pom Pom Crabs (Ptychognathus barbatus)! IMPORTANT: These crabs are tiny (most will be 1 inch or less at time of purchase, but they grow to 1.5 to 1.75 inches), making them prime candidates for nano or mini tanks. * In addition to feeding on particles that collect on the fuzzy patches of hair on their claws, the bulk of their diet is biofilm. They will also accept high-quality dry foods rich in plant matter. We very occasionally feed them protein-rich bites such as frozen bloodworms. Their natural habitat is throughout the tropical and sub-tropical regions in Madagascar, Taiwan, and Caledonia. Breeding in a home aquarium has not yet been reported. Unlike most crabs, these are fully aquatic and can stay underwater indefinitely. However, we recommend keeping your water line low or keeping a top on your tank, as they are occasional escape artists. They do best in tanks with plants (such as stem plants with leaves and Marimo Moss Balls) or a decoration that serves as a house and hiding place, as well as substrate like stones or peat. They can be kept with some peaceful species of fish, such as Pearl Danios, Scarlet Badis, and Rummy Nose Tetras. They can also be kept with snails, including Nerites, Pond Snails, and Sulawesi Snails. They can typically live with dwarf shrimp, such as Blue Diamond, Neon Yellow, and Tiger Shrimp (Caridina cantonensis), but there's a small risk of them attacking a sick or slow shrimp. Big Crayfish (freshwater lobsters) are possible tankmates but also may pose a risk, such as the Cherax, Procambarus, or Clarkii variety. CARE GUIDELINES: - Temperature: 68° - 78° F (20° - 25° C) - pH: 6.2 - 7.2 - KH: 1 - 5 dKH - Minimum tank size: 5 gallons - Average adult size: 1 inch (2.5 cm) or less - Average purchase size: 1/2 - 1 inch (1.3 - 2.5 cm)
