Though the term 'medical' might come in handy to describe this beautiful artwork, she struggles daily to engage the viewer in the hopes that they retain ownership of their bodies and better understand them within and without. Emotion runs heavy in every brush stroke. Every bone, nerve ending, and muscle is recreated with the understanding that there is greater meaning in them besides the typical bodily function. Barbara further explains, "I was extremely anxious to have an understanding of the locus and appearance of the kind of places where I felt my deepest emotions lay, e.g., 'the pit of my stomach' or 'deep in my heart'". All mediums are open for exploration, and in every new experience is another piece to the bigger puzzle. Ms. Stanford explores her body and creates a visually stunning mirror in which to explore ourselves.
