Brand Story A sense of place is the single most important factor when crafting a high quality wine. The French call it terroir, which is that certain something that exists because of the unique and irreproducible combination of climate, soil, rainfall, grape type and other critical factors that exist in a very specific place. When Al Scheid of Scheid Family Wines first planted grapes in Monterey County in 1972, he believed he had found a truly special place. And when Kathie Lee Gifford decided that she wanted to craft a wine, she looked to Monterey as that perfect intersection of ultra-premium quality and affordability. Crafting a beautiful wine requires a seamless continuum from the vineyard through the winery. Each decision made in the vineyard is intrinsically connected to the wine that is made in our cellar. Kathie Lee says, “It’s well-documented that I’m a wine lover so when I started talking to the Scheid family about making a wine, it felt like the most natural thing in the world. I set out to create wines I would want to drink and serve to friends in my home – an elegant Chardonnay like those I tasted in California in the 1970s and an easy-drinking yet balanced Red Blend. Heidi Scheid of Scheid Family Wines adds, “What we loved about meeting with Kathie for the first time is how down-to-earth and straightforward she is. She was very clear about her aim – to offer ultra-premium wines at an affordable price.
