When it comes to encouraging Norwegian musical talent no label can claim a more distinguished long-distance record, over three decades, than ECM. The label that put Garbarek and Rypdal on the map 35 years ago, has introduced several new Norwegian bands recently, notably the Christian Wallumrd Ensemble. It was formed with the aid of ECM producer Manfred Eicher, who brought the pianist/leader and his long-standing associates Arve Henriksen and Per Oddvar Johansen together with Nils kland, Norway's pre-eminent folk fiddler, for the charming album 'Sofienberg Variations' in 2003. All but three of the evocative compositions on the hauntingly beautiful and original new album 'A Year From Easter' are Wallumrd's - he claims inspiration from Paul Bley and Gyrgy Krtg, masters of aphoristic form - and his subtle pieces inspire telling solos from his musicians. The frameworks he creates and his patient chording establish atmospheres in which the musicians can "sing" in a new way.
