About Salsa Mundo Colombia: Music Born Of Conflict

Salsa Mundo is a new series from BGP that looks at the development of salsa around the world. Our first destination is Colombia, with its incredibly vibrant scene dominated by the legendary Discos Fuentes label. Over its 18 tracks the development of Colombian salsa is plotted: from its roots in the 1960s when the country was in a relative state of calm, through to the 1970s when the country became engulfed in armed struggle funded by the rising tide of cocaine smuggling. The music reflected the everyday challenges of life but also acted as a form of escape. All the major acts are covered - from Joe Arroyo, with his classic Rebellion, Fruko and the Latin Brothers. We also include less well-known sounds from Lisandro Messa and Combo Los Yogas. The whole disc closes on the incendiary afro-latin funk of Shakalaode from 1976 - a UK club classic since the mid 80s. The whole series is compiled and annotated by Latin music expert and collector Mike Delanian. The booklet is lavishly illustrated with many rare album covers from which the music has been taken. Future releases will focus on the salsa scenes in Venezuela and Puerto Rico.
