About Human Resource: Managing People At Work Place

Human resources management originally began as personnel management, but today it encompasses many well defined sub-streams of functions including workforce planning, recruitment, orientation and skills management, personnel administration & compensation, time management, employee benefits administration & personnel cost planning, performance appraisal, talent management, impression management, quality management, managing organisational health and so on. Each of these sub-streams is a more or less specialized function, yet one can say that HRM itself is more than these entire put together. Unlike managing other resources like machines, real estate and finance, managing human beings is a totally different ball game, simply because unlike other assets, each employee has his own goal and will work first to attain that goal, even if it is at the cost of the goals of the organisation. Thus, no employee can ever be made to provide his optimum output for the organisation unless the goals of the organisation are closely aligned with his own goals. This, in short, is the greatest challenge for all HRM experts, and in every organisation, the need is to go about it in a way which is unique and specific for that organisation. The book is divided into sixteen sections. Every section is confined to the understanding of human resource management and its allied areas of functioning. From the first section to last section of this book, summarized concepts have been outlined with supporting research work in the field. Brief outline about the subject matter has been put forwarded for better understanding of the human resource management starting from historical genesis to future prospects. Hope, this handbook would guide the researchers and practioners in the field of organisational behaviour and its allied fields.
