Dave Bushman started doing genealogy research when he learned that he carried the BRCA1 genetic mutation that greatly increases the chance of developing cancer. He has an extensive history of cancer in his family, including his mother dying at age 42 of breast and ovarian cancer, one of her sisters dying at 34 of breast cancer and another dying at 35 of ovarian cancer. This extensive family history spurred him to trace the existence of this mutation in his ancestors and to contact all family members who might also carry the mutation. He has done substantial research on his family using the various tools of genealogy and is a member of several genealogical organizations. The tools of genealogy research helped him in his search to find a long-lost cousin.
