In the city of Athens, in the traditional and by now densely-populated district of Ambelokipi, one can find one of the most beautiful samples of post-Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture, the 19th century, small Church of St Thomas the Apostle right next to the resplendent municipal church dedicated to the same Saint. Its history is lost in the mist of past centuries. This small church is a great symbol of the Orthodox Faith. Unwavering amidst the centuries, its endurance was put to the test in a period rife with war and destruction but it still manages to transfer to us, nowadays, lively encounters with our further Orthodox past. It generally comprises a sample of ecclesiastical architectural austerity that opens itself to the scrutiny of today’s Christian and Byzantine Archaeology. The purpose of this treatise is to explore the church of St Thomas in its totality, both as a priceless sample of post-Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture as well as a covenant of 19th century religious iconography and civilization.
