DESCRIPTIONS

70 days to maturity. Perilla frutescens var. frutescens. Warm season annual. Perilla is a lovely herb that is a vivid green on the top and a soft purple on the underside of the leaves. Both the flowers and the leaves are edible and delicious. Widely used in various types of Asian cooking, perilla has a fresh flavor that has hints of basil, citrus, and mint. This annual herb is beautiful, tasty, and all-around a versatile choice. You can even grow it as a microgreen! Non-GMO herb seed, Heirloom Shiso Perilla Herb Garden Seed. Perilla frutescens var. crispa. As a beefsteak variety and member of the mint family, the smooth leaves of Green Shiso Perilla herbs provide rich calcium, antioxidants and minerals as a nutrient powerhouse. You can steep the leaves as a bright herbal green tea or as an alternative to wheat, make tuna lettuce wraps as shiso also contains protein! Prepare fertile, well-drained soil. Sow seeds in late spring/summer after last frost, nighttime temperatures are warmer than 45°F, in a warm, sunny location. Spacing 10-12". Seeds need light to germinate so cover with a thin soil layer. Plant is heat tolerant and prefers full sun to light shade. For best germination, seed should be stored at 41°F until planted. Also soak seeds in water for 24 hours before sowing. Keep soil moist but avoid soil too damp; seedlings can be killed. Fertilize as needed. To start seed indoors, sow seed 4 to 6 weeks before the last spring frost. Seeds will germinate in 7 to 21 days at 70°F (21°C). Use as a wrap for meats, sushi, salad, tempura or as an edible garnish. Leaves are also pickled and eaten during winter. Shiso will grow in average soil. Seed depth: 1/4". Seed spacing: 10-12". Shiso roots spread via rhizomes; be careful that shiso roots do not impede the growth of other herbs.
