HOJICHA ROASTED GREEN TEA – A one-of-a-kind type of Japanese tea, this roasted green tea hojicha stands apart from other traditional green teas. By using time-honored roasting methods, we gently roast the tea leaves to remove bitterness. As a result, the hojicha develops a pleasant earthy, toasty aroma and a beautiful reddish-brown hue. This transformation turns ordinary green tea into roasted green tea, famously known as hojicha tea or hoji tea.
ORGANIC GREEN TEA – Our tea is certified green tea organic by JONA and JAS. We meticulously select only the finest organic Japanese sencha green tea from Uji, Kyoto, Japan. We proudly collaborate with local tea masters and a historic tea plantation that has been carefully preserved by passionate farmers for over 350 years, dating back to the Genroku era.
ORIGINS OF HOJICHA TEA – In the Meiji period, a tea merchant began experimenting to make use of leftover parts of the tea plant. By roasting the leaves, stems, and twigs over charcoal, hojicha loose leaf tea was born. The pleasant smoky aroma and smooth, mild flavor quickly gained popularity, making hojicha a favorite among tea drinkers in Japan. This historical technique created the distinctive roasted green tea hojicha we enjoy today.
TRADITIONAL ROASTING METHOD – We carefully blend hojicha loose leaf using select Sencha, Bancha, and Kukicha cultivars. These tea leaves are roasted over high heat using traditional methods to highlight the signature scent and flavor of roasted tea hojicha. With its low caffeine content, hoji cha is ideal for drinking after meals or in the evening, and can be safely enjoyed by babies, children, and pregnant women.
HOT BREW & COLD BREW – Experience the versatility of hojicha tea loose leaf with two classic brewing methods. Hot brewing preserves the beneficial properties of the tea leaves while offering a comforting, invigorating drink. For warm weather, cold brewing—known as mizudashi hojicha—brings out a remarkably smooth flavor, making hojicha loose leaf tea a refreshing and cooling beverage during summer.
