Pepino Melon is primarily enjoyed fresh. The sweet and juicy flesh can be eaten directly after harvesting, sliced into fruit salads, added to desserts, or served as a refreshing snack, offering a mild, unique flavor to your diet.
It thrives as a perennial in USDA Hardiness Zones 8-11. In cooler zones, it is suggested to grow it in containers that can be moved indoors for protection during cold weather.
Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last spring frost. Sow seeds shallowly in a well-draining starting mix, keeping the medium lightly moist. Warmth is beneficial for germination, with ideal temperatures between 70-75°F (21-24°C). Transplant seedlings outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.
With its attractive foliage and strikingly streaked fruit, the Pepino Melon plant adds ornamental value. It is suitable for garden beds and also grows well in large containers on patios or balconies.
Plant in a location with full sun to partial shade and in well-drained soil. Maintain consistent watering but avoid waterlogged conditions. Providing support as the plant grows can help keep it upright. Harvest fruits before the first fall frost.
