MR VOLCANO Rigidizer is a colloidal-silica concentrate that soaks into ceramic fiber, cures to a firm surface, and helps reduce fiber disturbance under flame. It’s an easy, proven way to prep your liner before adding a thin refractory coat. The mix-1:1 formula makes 32 oz and is tinted so you can easily confirm full coverage. What people usually try — and why it falls short Running bare wool (no rigidizer): Uncoated fiber blankets are easily eroded by flame and handling. Solution: This rigidizer hardens the exposed surface to resist erosion and helps lock down loose fibers. DIY “waterglass” (sodium silicate) spray: Waterglass can form a glassy layer with relatively low softening temperature for forge interiors. Solution: A purpose-made colloidal-silica rigidizer is formulated for fiber linings in high-velocity flame environments. Skipping rigidizer and going straight to mortar: Applying refractory mortar to fluffy fiber can lead to weak spots and flaking. Solution: Rigidize first, then apply thin refractory coats for better adhesion and durability. Heavy castable layers: Thick castables add weight and thermal mass, slow heat-up, and reduce chamber volume. Solution: Rigidize the wool and keep refractory layers thin to preserve fast heat-up. Why this formula is easier in the shop Mix 1:1 (makes 32 oz): Simple measuring and coverage. The red tint helps you see what you’ve hit—don’t use color as a dryness indicator. Freeze-resistant: Designed to resist freezing for better handling in cold conditions. Works with Superwool (AES) & RCF: Compatible across common insulation blankets used in forges, furnaces, and foundries. How to Use (summary) Prep the blanket: Lay out insulation, wear PPE, and lightly pre-wet with clean water (mist—don’t soak). Mix: Combine 16 oz concentrate + 16 oz water (shake ~45 sec). Apply: Spray or brush to fully wet all faces of the blanket (use the tint to verify coverage). Install & dry: Fit the blanket while still damp, then air-dry 24–48 hrs or run several brief, low-pressure heat cycles to drive off moisture before any refractory layers. Ensure it’s rigid and dry before coating. Tip: After rigidizing, apply thin coats of refractory (e.g., Satanite) and cure per instructions for a tougher hot face.
