DESCRIPTIONS

Botanical Characteristics "Charentais" heirloom melon, Cucumis melo 'Charentais', is celebrated for its exquisite taste and aromatic qualities. This French heirloom produces small to medium-sized fruits, weighing approximately 2 to 3 pounds each. The melons have a smooth, blue-green rind that transitions to a more yellow hue as it matures, with a distinctive, deep orange flesh inside. "Charentais" is renowned for its exceptionally sweet and juicy flesh, with a concentrated flavor that epitomizes the essence of summer. Its compact size makes it an excellent choice for gardeners with limited space. Growing Conditions "Charentais" melons require warm, sunny conditions and well-drained, fertile soil to thrive. They are warm-season crops, preferring temperatures that are consistently warm but not excessively hot. This variety is well-suited for cultivation in garden beds or large containers, provided they are placed in a location that receives ample sunlight. Sowing and Care Plant "Charentais" melon seeds directly into the garden once the threat of frost has passed and the soil has warmed, sowing them about 1 inch deep. Space the plants about 24-36 inches apart to allow for adequate vine growth and air circulation. Melons benefit from consistent watering, especially during the fruit-setting and growing stages. A layer of mulch can help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and keep the fruits clean and off the ground. Harvesting "Charentais" melons are ready for harvest when they exhibit a slight softening at the blossom end and the rind changes from green to a more yellow color, typically 75-90 days after planting. The fruit should detach easily from the vine with a gentle twist. Harvesting in the morning captures the melon at its peak flavor.
