Pit Boss Wood Pellet Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS) Question: I have a different brand of wood pellet grill. Can I still use Pit Boss pellets? Answer: Yes! In fact, we recommend Pit Boss pellets for any wood pellet grill, smoker, and firepit, as well as adding smoky flavor when cooking with charcoal grills and smoke tubes. Pit Boss pellets are designed and crafted for optimal grill performance AND flavor. Your grill or smoker will thank you for using Pit Boss pellets – and so will those who will be dining on the food you make with them. Question: Does the length of a pellet matter? Answer: Yes. If wood pellets are too long, they can affect the function of the appliance. Pit Boss pellets are typically between three-quarters of an inch to about an inch and a quarter. Any longer than that, and the pellets can wedge together in the hopper to create a bridge above the feed pot. When that happens, the grill or smoker’s fuel source is cut off because the pellets are stuck, preventing them from being fed into the auger to keep the fire going in the burn pot. Question: Why are some pellets darker or lighter than others? Does the color matter? Answer: The variation in color among hardwood pellets stems from the type of wood used and what region or area the tree was growing. Trees have different nutrients, which vary based on location. Potassium, nitrogen, carbon levels, and much more all play into the color of wood. Also, if you were to look at the inside of the trunk of one tree, you’ll notice it’s not all one color and there are variations that form rings in the wood. As you can see, there are many factors that affect the color of wood, which in turn affects the color of pellets. However, the color of the pellets isn’t something that determines how they perform as a fuel source for cooking. Question: How are Pit Boss pellets held together if you don’t use a binder? Answer: Oh, that’s an easy one. Pressure, heat, and the wood’s natural lignin. Question: How can I tell if my pellets are still good to use? Answer: First, let’s talk about what makes pellets go “bad.” Wood pellets really have one enemy: moisture. It’s simple to tell if your pellets have been affected by moisture. They will bloat or deconstruct and turn back into dust. That’s because our pellets are made with pressure and heat, so water can make them deconstruct. This is why it’s important to properly store your pellets after opening the bag. Question: What is the best way to store hardwood pellets? Answer: It’s best to store pellets in a cool, dry place. Once the bag has been opened, we recommend storing them in a sealable container, like a 5-gallon bucket with a lid, to keep moisture out.
