CAPOEIRA is a brazilian martial art, or warfare, whose origins date back to the African NiGolo (""Zebra dance""). In terms of content, Capoeira is characterized by three levels: the fight, the music and the ""Roda"" (Portuguese ""circle""). The BERIMBAU is a musical bow from the north-east of Brazil and is the main instrument of the Brazilian fight dance Capoeira. Instrument characteristics can be traced back to the music bows widely used in Africa, in particular to two calabash music bows in Angola, whose strings are struck by the capoeiristas with a thin stick.
