DESCRIPTIONS

This large, flowering herb has many names. Comfrey (Symphytum officinale), also called common comfrey, true comfrey, knitbone, knitback, and consound, is great for tree guilds, wildflower plantings, and pollinator gardens. While comfrey is a Boraginaceae or borage and forget-me-not family member, it isn’t a culinary herb like its cousin borage. A few of comfrey’s common names hint at its heritage as a medicinal herb. Historically, herbalists used comfrey to create salves, poultices, and compresses to address skin irritations, burns, diaper rash, broken bones, sprains, and bruises. Permaculture enthusiasts use comfrey as an “accumulator,” or a plant that accumulates nutrients from the soil, and as a “chop and drop” mulch crop, meaning they cut the leaves to use as a mulch.
