Use them with matwork routines to increase intensity and bring awareness to shoulder stability and strength or target desired muscle groups. About Stott Pilates Lindsay and Moira Merrithew met in New York City when he was studying at Juilliard School of Performing Arts and she was a dancer. While rehabilitating from a broken foot that ended her dancing career, she discovered a then-little-known exercise program developed by Joseph Pilates and became a Pilates instructor. When the couple moved to Toronto, where Lindsay pursued work in theatre, television, and film, they couldn't find proper equipment for Pilates exercises and decided to make their own equipment with the help of a carpenter. As Pilates began to gain wider recognition in the early 1990s, the Merrithews seized the opportunity to begin manufacturing modern, professional-quality Pilates equipment. Their company now operates some 30 Pilates training centers in North America in addition to manufacturing Pilates equipment and accessories.
