About Historic Missouri Roadsides, 2nd Edition

Product Description “Sometimes you just want to get in the car and take off, see the countryside, see what’s out there. And Bill Hart can help you do that.” - Steve Potter, STL TV“Whether you are a first-time visitor or an area local, Hart’s descriptions, photographs and illustrations will make you want to check out tours like Route 79 along the Mississippi River, El Camino Real leading down to the Missouri Bootheel or Route 24 spanning the width of the state from Kansas City to West Quincy.” - STL News“One thing I really liked about the book is that when you’re at one destination or attraction, you get suggestions on how to go to the next one... It sort of takes you through the journey.” - STL Public Radio From the Back Cover Who hasn't heard the call of the open road and felt the desire to get out of the city and see the beauty of the Show-Me State? Historic Missouri Roadsides offers all the history, recommendations, and itineraries you need to make the most of a picturesque trip down a two-lane road or highway. Richly illustrated with photographs from the author's own collection, you'll find tours of varying lengths, most beginning near Kansas City or St. Louis. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a local "staycationer," you'll want to check out these tours like Route 79 along the Mississippi River or El Camino Real leading down to the Missouri Bootheel. Don't miss the Route 24 tour through Excelsior Springs and across the state into Ralls County or a chance to see the Osage Hills and Prairies in Laclede County. Find insider's tips on the best locally owned businesses, restaurants, and lodging along the way with character and a hometown feel. The second edition of the book offers even more destination trips including Fulton, Sedalia, the Boonslick area, the Arcadia Valley, Glasgow, and St. Joseph. Bill Hart takes the wheel and shows you the very best of the roads from St. Charles County to old Route 66. Thumb a ride through this beautiful guide to enjoy all that small town Missouri has to offer. About the Author Bill Hart is a fifth generation Missouri native, having grown up in Perry County in southeast Missouri. His interest in small town and roadside Missouri was fostered by his work for the past several years with the Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation (Missouri Preservation), where he currently serves as Executive Director. He holds a degree in Historic Preservation from Southeast Missouri State University and did his graduate coursework in Architectural History at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. Bill is particularly interested in vanishing Missouri building types, including roadside and countryside. He was one of the founders of the Missouri Barn Alliance and Rural Network (Mo BARN), advocating for documentation and preservation of Missouri's historic farmsteads.
