About U.S. Army Campaigns Of The War Of 1812: The

After eighteen months of fighting, the United States was no closer to achieving its war aims than when Congress declared war in June 1812.  With Napoleon defeated, the British turned their well experienced soldiers and large and highly effective naval forces toward North America.  It was the British intention to punish the upstart United States and perhaps to extend the border of British North America southward.  The campaign along the U.S.-Canadian border started with the British raid on Oswego, New York.  The meat of this booklet, however, is the mighty clash along the Niagara River - Chippewa, Lundy's Lane, and the siege of Fort Erie.  The decisive Battle of Plattsburgh in September ended in an improbable victory for American forces and ensured that the British could not claim territory along the border with Lower Canada.  This short (58 page) study covers the major military events of the war with clarity.
