About More Than Meets The Eye: Seeing Art With All Five

Product Description This book lets you do more than look at beautiful art. It shows you how to feel it, taste it, smell it, hear it, and touch it! Looking at art with the right attitude can let you hear a cannon boom or know what it feels like to stroke an ermine. You can smell a stinky pig or enjoy the tastes of teatime. In another unique tour through the world of art, Bob Raczka shares his enthusiasm for his subject with youngsters while introducing them to the work of many of the world's finest artists. From School Library Journal Gr 1-4–Rhyming text paired with striking reproductions encourages readers to utilize the senses when contemplating paintings. Kids drink milk with Jan Vermeer's Kitchen Maid, listen to the clashing foils of Milton Avery's Fencers, catch a “stinky” whiff from Jamie Wyeth's Portrait of a Pig, and pat a Tortilla Maker's floury treat (Diego Rivera). This simple yet imagination-expanding method of experiencing art will captivate youngsters. α(c) Copyright 2013. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted. Review "A fine addition for most collections." -- School Library Journal "Raczka's short, rhyming text gives structure to the book, but the color reproductions of well-chosen, vivid paintings steal the show." -- Booklist "This is a work to examine again and again. A delightful, insightful introduction to the world of art." -- Kirkus Reviews About the Author Bob Raczka and his wife Amy are the co-creators of three masterpieces: Robert, Carl and Emma. They live in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, with their dog Rufus, who is also a piece of work. As a boy, Bob loved to draw―especially dinosaurs, cars, and airplanes. He also enjoyed making paper airplanes and model rockets. He's a lifelong Cubs fan. Thanks to good grades (and some help from his high school art teachers) he went to college at the University of Illinois, where he majored in art. On a whim, Bob took an advertising copywriting class and loved it. When he graduated, he became an advertising writer. But when his first child, Robert, was born, he rediscovered children's books and thought, "I want to do this." So Bob began sending out manuscripts and collecting rejection letters. Five years later, he sold his first manuscript, a book about art called No One Saw. Little did he know, it would become the first book in his ongoing series, Bob Raczka's Art Adventures.
