In 1926 the newly founded Irish Free State formed a committee led by poet W. B. Yeats to plan the design of the county’s new coins. The Gaelic Harp would be on the front of all the coins, while the reverse would feature a different farm animal for each denomination. In 1940 the front of all Irish coins was redesigned with a simplified harp and with the country's new name “éire” (Ireland).
