The accelerator pedal position sensor tells your throttle body how far to open. When you press or let off the gas pedal, it sends that data to the vehicle's engine control unit (ECU) to be relayed to the fuel system and throttle body. An accelerator sensor may fail due to heat from the firewall.
The primary reason why the APP sensor fails is due to exposure to high heat, as it's typically located on the floorboard next to the firewall of the vehicle, in very close proximity to the engine.
