About Steel Guitar Rodeo

Amazon.com On Steel Guitar Rodeo and its 2002 predecessor, Steel Guitar Air Show, pedal steel guitarist Jon Rauhouse and his band of rootsifying Chicago regulars create a dreamy generic blend that froths its basic shots of country with tinges of Western swing and jazz and Hawaiian music--and the "Theme from Perry Mason." As you might expect from titles like "Hamma Hamma Hula" and "Swingin' Elephant Graveyard," this is happy music, even when guest singer is aching beautifully through "Prisoner of Love" and the estimable leader, in his rancher guise, is "wishin' and hopin' in vain" for rain. A keenly (and cleanly) melodic affair, the album also features vocals by Neko Case, Sally Timms and man Howe Gelb and a mess of ace accompaniment by featured guitarist Tommy Connell. So cohesive are the effects, the early jazz experimentation of 's zippy "Powerhouse" and the thick British nostalgia of the tearjerker, "(There'll Be Blue Birds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover," sound right at home together. --Lloyd Sachs
