About The Three Theban Plays: Oedipus Rex, Oedipus At

In one volume, all three extant Theban Plays that made up the ancient Greek Oedipus Cycle (or, Oedipus Trilogy): Oedipus Rex (or Oedipus the King), Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone. Originally written and performed in 5th century BC, the Theban Plays are classics of ancient Greek literature and among the most influential and important theatrical works ever produced, dealing with timeless questions of fate, duty, and justice, that are as relevant today as ever. While not originally published or conceived of as a trilogy, the three extant Theban plays all focus on the fate of the city-state of Thebes and multiple generations of its cursed royal family, most famously the character of Oedipus, his mother Jocasta, and his daughters, Antigone and Ismene. This new edition is based on the 1912 translations by Francis Storr (1839-1919). Sophocles (c. 497-406) was one of the foremost tragic playwrights of ancient Greece. The author of over 120 plays, only seven are still extant in nearly complete form: Ajax, Antigone, Women of Trachis, Oedipus Rex, Electra, Philoctetes and Oedipus at Colonus.
