About Complete Metalsmith: Student Edition

Product Description Students, hobbyists, and others just getting started in metalworking have turned to this informative, easy-access reference time and time again. Without getting bogged down in confusing details, it teaches them what they need to know about the most effective techniques for working with gold, platinum, copper, brass, steel, plaster, and more. In fact, it covers most of the same subjects as the professional version, only in a simpler fashion: metals, tools, surfaces, shaping, joining, casting, stones, and mechanisms. And, like the larger edition, it has a spiral spine and attractive color images throughout. Newcomers to the field will especially appreciate the safety tips and the many charts covering melting points, conversion, factors, and other fundamental knowledge. Review For the past 20 years we've shared our workbenches with a dear old friend upon whom we've depended on for all sorts of information and advice: Complete Metalsmith by Tim McCreight. That its once bright cover is now stained and its crisp pages dog-eared in no way diminishes our relieance on this treasured old friend. This book has become a standard reference for beginner and advanced metalsmiths. Totally revised in 2004, we are pleased to see that nothing had been lost. Instead, a plethora of new materials and techniques are presented that will enable metalsmiths to master the challenges of modern technology. -- Tom & Kay Benham, Lapidary Journal This is much like the first book I bought way back when, but it is slimmer in shape with a sturdier cover, perfect for the toolbox. When compared to my much older edition, it boasts more detailed information and illustrations, plus a section on metal clay, but it still covers much of the important basics such as metal data, tool descriptions, and various metal related methods. The appendices are also excellent references for quickly looking up things like the weight of sheet or wire, temperature conversions, and melting points. -- Tammy Powley, About.com About the Author Tim McCreight is a metalsmith, teacher, and the author of a dozen books about jewelry. His books are known for their clear explanations, practical approach, and helpful illustrations. He combines his talents as a maker with his natural love of teaching to produce books that make complicated tasks seem simple, and inspire readers to do their best work.
