About Christianity And Liberalism

“The chief modern rival of Christianity is ‘liberalism’” So says author J. Gresham Machen in his scathing response to Harry Emerson Fosdick's 1922 sermon "Shall the Fundamentalists Win?" It was the early 1920’s, and the Presbyterian church, along with many mainstream protestant denominational churches, was developing a chasm between liberal and conservative factions. It began for Machen during his tenure at Princeton Seminary. At first, Machen and his conservative associates were merely forced to leave Princeton and found their own seminary (Westminster Theological Seminary). But soon, Machen had to leave the Northern Presbyterian Church and found his own denomination as well (the Orthodox Presbyterian Church). He would go on to become one of the most outspoken opponents of liberalism in the church until the day he died. At his eulogy, it was said of him, “...he was the world’s greatest champion of the old-fashioned, evangelical religion.” Black & Gold House of Books strives to provide the best quality literature at a fair price. We provide everything you want in a book and nothing you don’t. All of our publications provide the original text, edited for grammar and spelling, with foreign and deprecated words defined in footnotes, a brief author biography, and a list of the author’s other works. Most titles are available in paperback, hardcover and ebook formats.
