About Anthony Holborne: "My Selfe" 16th Century

Amazon.com Holborne? Holborne who? Well, it seems that Anthony Holborne was a courtier in the service of Queen Elizabeth I and a sort of Renaissance man--a lawyer, man of letters, and composer. If we can judge by this music, composed for five-part consort but with the added directive that the parts may be altered, he was quite a fine composer, chock-full of the charm, formality, playfulness, rhythmic variations, and melodies we're accustomed to hear in music of this era. The 32 pieces are arranged as a life-story, from "His Happy Youth" through "A happy mid-life" to "We follow his soul to Paradise." Paul O'Dette on lute and cittern, along with David Douglass's wonderful quintet, The King's Noyse, play this music as to the manner (and era) born, and this disc is an unalloyed delight. --Robert Levine Product description CD
