About Old New England

Product Description OLD NEW ENGLAND THE BAND Bob McQuillen - piano Jane Orzechowski - fiddle Deanna Stiles - flute ---------------- Old New England is contra at it's most joyful and dancer-friendly, propelled by Bob McQuillen's famous 'boom-chuck' piano style. Bob's melodic purity shines throughout this disc, which contains twenty-seven McQuillen originals, including the classic 'Amelia's,' and the achingly evocative 'Eugene O'Donnell.' With Jane Orzechowski and Deanna Stiles, Old New England provides top flight New England contra dance music. Scott Alerik (more in the liner notes) ----------------- 'Bob McQuillen has been an inspiration to me since we met twenty-odd years ago. His generous nature, lover for the dance and it's music, and ability on the keyboard combine to make him a national treasure. In Old New England, he joins forces with two members of my generation, whose talents complement his, and whose love for the tradition equals his. Long may they continue to bring joy to dancer's hearts, in New England and around the world!' Tony Parkes --------------- 'Their roots go back to the days of Ralph Page, Duke Miller and Roger Whynot; they play straight-ahead, no frills, New England style music the old fashioned way, with great joy, love and respect for the tradition, and lots of harmonious energy. This album will be well received by the dance community. Steve Zakon-Anderson. About the Artist Like getting paid to eat ice cream. That's how Bob McQuillen describes his long career as a respected piano player and composer in the modern history of New England contra dance music. His resume charts the revival of this thriving American folk form, from his 1947 debut in the seminal Ralph Page Orchestra to his profoundly influential role in Dudley Laufman's Canerbury Country Dance Orchestra, the most important of the '70s revival bands, to his pioneering recent work, Pure Quill, with master Yankee fiddler, Rodney Miller. Old New England is McQuillen's current band.
