About Alocasia Reginula 'Black

Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet' is a member of Aroid family which is known for how large so of its members can get. Plants in this family are commonly known as Elephant Ears due to the large, ear shaped leaves. Not all plants in the Aroid family get giant leaves, and such is the case with 'Black Velvet'. Originally described as a native to Africa, this plant is kept as a common houseplant. Dark green, velvet like leaves with light green veining makes this a unique and beautiful plant to have on display. Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet' can reach 12-24" tall and prefers shade. Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet' makes a great plant for container or pot. It does well on a patio in full shade. It is not recommended to plant in a terrarium unless it is a large size. This Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet' makes a terrific houseplant. Keep soil moist but don't overwater. Don't place in direct sunlight as leaves may burn. Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet' can get quite large. As such, it is best planted towards the back of the vivarium. Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet' has moderate light needs. Intense light may easily burn or discolor leaves, while dim light will result in poor plant growth. Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet' does have moderate watering needs. Alocasia reginula 'Black Velvet' craves moisture, but saturated soil should be avoided. This plant grows from bulbs and will form a clump of plants over time. It makes a great focal point in a vivarium with it's striking leaves and unusual shape. It also makes a great calling and egg laying site for poison dart frogs.
