About Autism

Product description Presents essays on autism, discussing its causes, diagnosis, and treatment methods, and contains profiles of autistic individuals and parents with autistic children. From Booklist The purpose of the Perspectives on Diseases and Disorders series is to provide a clear discussion of various maladies through solid explanation, a look at the controversies surrounding the disease, and, finally, personal testimonials about living with a serious illness. Gathering together chapters written by different authors, this particular entry in the series gets off to a slow start with an introduction and initial chapter that repeat information; at times, topics are raised that need more explanation (e.g., what characteristics of autism did Albert Einstein, Lewis Carroll, and Thomas Jefferson, among others, display?). Much of the material in the first section is taken from scientific studies, and it can be dry. Most interesting are the personal stories told by those who are autistic, and others, such as Holly Robinson Peete, who have had success bringing up an autistic child. The book’s good-size typeface and assortment of photographs make it look easier to read than it is. But researchers will find plenty of information here and can go on to consult resources provided in the closing bibliography and list of Internet sites. Grades 7-10. --Ilene Cooper
