Cabooses came onto the American railroad scene in the late 1800s, pulling up the rear of freight railroads. They served as an office and living space for the railroad's crew until they were discontinued in the 1980s. Since then, the safety and office functions that the crew handled from the caboose have been done by computers. Though many people think cabooses were bright red, red cabooses were rare. Silver Series rolling stock features: blackened metal wheels, body mounted couplers, and non-magnetic axles.
