The AC4400CW is an AC traction variation of its sister locomotive, the C44-9W "Dash 9." Both locomotives share a similar body design, though the AC4400CW features a large box on the rear left of the operator cab where the inverter banks and traction circuitry can be found. These GE-built locomotives had bolsterless, low-weight HiAd trucks that were designed for improved traction, and were also equipped with a split cooling system to lower engineer temperatures and fuel consumption. The Chicago & Northwestern operated a number of these engines prior to their being added to the UP roster starting in the early 2000's.
