Summer Hanson, Co-owner of Eco Collective "At a time when we're dumping mountains of food in landfills and filling the oceans with plastic trash, it's clear we need to change how we handle the problem of waste. Rethink the Bins is a great place to start: a clear, practical, and informative guide to the ways our waste systems work (and don't work)."-Susan Freinkel, author of Plastic: A Toxic Love Story From the Author After I published Material Value, I started giving presentations to community groups about resource use and reducing waste. While recycling was a relatively small part of that book, it was the subject that attracted the most attention. In November 2019, I took advantage of the inspiration behind NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) to push forward with a short nonfiction book that I could write in a month. When choosing a topic for this second book, I thought of those readers who appreciated the recycling chapter in Material Value but wanted more practical tips. I indeed completed a rough draft of Rethink the Bins (with a different working title) during November 2019. Throughout the editing process, I made improvements with the reader in mind. Since I live in the US and had already researched municipal waste in this country, it made the most sense to keep my examples and list of resources relevant for the US market, which is the bulk of my audience. I am, however, considering editions targeting other regions, such as the UK. I hope that you find the book informative and helpful as you begin or continue your journey tow
