Plan B is backup birth control that you take within 72-hours after unprotected sex or birth control failure. The sooner you take it, the better it works. Plan B works by temporarily delaying ovulation. It will NOT impact implantation of a fertilized egg. It is NOT an abortion pill. Plan B is the most widely available emergency contraception. It's available right on the shelf at all major retail stores, usually near other sexual health items (like condoms!). Some women may experience side effects from taking emergency contraception; these side effects tend to be mild. Possible side effects include: changes in your period, such as spotting or bleeding before their next period; nausea; abdominal cramps; tiredness; headache; and dizziness. If your period is more than a week late, it’s possible you might be pregnant. Get a pregnancy test and follow up with your healthcare professional.
